Portraits and film imagery from Indian cinema. The visual language here is distinct from Hollywood — warmer grades, higher saturation and more elaborate costume and jewellery detail, which has practical consequences for how these look on a screen.
Detail that rewards resolution
Embroidery, jewellery and textile pattern are the defining detail in much of this imagery, and they are exactly the kind of fine high-frequency detail that compression discards first. A heavily compressed Bollywood portrait loses the fabric texture that made it striking, leaving flat colour where there was pattern. Check the file size against the resolution on each page — the difference is more visible in this collection than in most.
Warm grades on a cool screen
Many phones and monitors ship with a cool white balance by default, which fights the warm grading in this imagery and makes it look muddy rather than golden. If these look flatter on your screen than in the preview, your display colour temperature is a likelier cause than the file.
On rights
Film imagery and performer likenesses belong to their studios and the individuals concerned. Personal use is fine; commercial use is not ours to license.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the jewellery detail look flat in some images?
Fine embroidery and jewellery detail is high-frequency information, which is the first thing image compression discards. Compare the file size to the resolution listed on the page — a large image in a small file has usually lost that texture.
