Cinematic framing and your monitor
Film is shot wider than your screen. Most cinema is 2.39:1 while monitors are 16:9, which means a genuine film still set as a wallpaper will letterbox with black bars top and bottom unless it has been cropped or extended. That is not a fault — it is the source format — but it is worth expecting. On a 21:9 ultrawide, the same images fit almost perfectly.
Colour grading is the appeal
What makes film stills work as wallpaper is the grade: deliberate, consistent colour that a snapshot does not have. Teal-and-orange, desaturated cool, warm golden — these are choices made by a colourist, and they give an image cohesion that survives being scaled and sat behind icons.
On rights
Films, stills, posters and actor likenesses belong to their studios and the individuals concerned. Personal use on your own screen is fine. Commercial use of a recognisable film image or performer is not something our licence can grant.
